Jan Pavelka is a Czech-born photographer and filmmaker based in Southampton, UK, working across photography, film and visual storytelling.

With more than 20 years of professional experience, Jan has worked on a wide range of productions, from feature films and commercials to music videos, editorial, portraiture and specialist photography. His portfolio includes behind-the-scenes and unit stills, working with production teams and directors on projects ranging from independent productions to international campaigns, including work connected with Ridley Scott’s The Seven Worlds for Hennessy XO.

Alongside photography, Jan works as a videographer and DOP, bringing an understanding of cinematography, lighting and production that allows him to work naturally within a film set rather than simply documenting it from the outside.

His approach is quiet, observant and unobtrusive. He understands the rhythm of a working set and knows when to step forward and when to stay in the background. The aim is always to create images that feel genuine, photographs that capture people, atmosphere and the details that make a production what it is.

Jan holds an MA in Visual Communication from Solent University, completed in 2019. He subsequently returned to Solent as an Artist in Residence, and has also worked with the university as a workshop leader and visiting lecturer. His practice combines professional experience with a strong interest in visual communication, storytelling and the way photography can shape how people understand a project.

Based in Southampton, Jan works across the UK and internationally.
